Research Group

We use and develop new optical, X-ray, and analytical tools and use them to study how materials respond to their surroundings. We focus on the “in-between” scales where we seek to connect the dynamics and collective behaviors of atomic-scale structure to the bulk properties, focusing on the science underlying needs for sustainable manufacturing.

Our research projects study the fundamental dynamics of defects, the science behind decarbonizing steel/ironmaking, and science to enable metal 3D printing.

We are currently hiring motivated students and postdocs for projects exploring the mesoscale.
